Cathy Tansley

I set up Horsforth Chiropractic in June 2017 after 11 years of experience working in various different practices in the north of England and as a locum chiropractor around the country. While I was pregnant with my son I had time to reflect on the skills and experience that I had gained over the years. I saw that there was a need for a female-centric practice designed to cater for women and their families, especially during pregnancy, the postnatal period and beyond. After my maternity leave came to an end I created Horsforth Chiropractic to do just that. There are many changes that happen in the body when growing a new person and getting the body geared up for breastfeeding. This creates brand new stresses and strains on the body. Some women experience more aches and pains during pregnancy; this can be one reason why they seek out the help of a chiropractor. However, increasingly, I see women who don’t have any symptomatic problems, who are simply looking for a natural, drug-free way to better support their body during pregnancy, get ready for labour and help themselves to recover as quickly as possible afterwards. How do I help people? I check the spine and nervous system. The nervous system is like the conductor of an orchestra, keeping your body working in harmony. The spine protects the nervous system but spinal misalignments can cause parts of the ‘orchestra’ in your body to play out of tune with the rest, causing disease which can affect the health and function of the body. Chiropractors help to correct the misalignments in the spine, reducing the pressure on the nervous system, and allow the body to better express optimum health and healing. The Webster technique is a chiropractic technique that has been developed to specifically analyse and check a woman’s pelvis when she is pregnant (although children and men also benefit from the same techniques as they are gentle and effective). ICPA Webster-certified chiropractors, including myself, are trained how to apply the technique. Rather than an outside-in approach ie. giving your body something outside of itself to provide health, chiropractic is an inside-out approach. This is because chiropractors work with the body helping the nervous system to communicate freely with the rest of the body. By working with a woman’s body to create more space, better alignment of the joints and allowing more optimal nervous system communication the body and the baby are able to find the best possible position for birth.   My website is horsforthchiropractic.com.
